الطين الفرنسي (المونتموريلونيت) أحد المعادن الطينية ذات البنية الطبقية والمساحة السطحية المرتفعة، ولذلك يتميز بقدرته على امتصاص الماء والزيوت والرواسب المتراكمة على سطح البشرة. يتكوّن أساسًا من السيليكات، وقد يحتوي على المغنيسيوم والكالسيوم والحديد ومعادن أخرى بنسب تختلف بحسب مصدر الطين.
يناسب بصورة خاصة البشرة الدهنية والمختلطة، ويدخل في أقنعة الوجه والجسم والصابون ومنتجات التنظيف. تُخلط ملعقة صغيرة منه تدريجيًا بالماء أو بأحد الهيدروسولات حتى تتكون عجينة ناعمة، ثم توزّع طبقة رقيقة على البشرة لمدة تتراوح بين خمس وعشر دقائق، وتُشطف قبل أن تجف وتتشقّق تمامًا. ويمكن مزجه بالكاولين للحصول على قناع ألطف.
